How to Check a Gas Fitter Is Licensed in Queensland

Short answer: Only a person holding a current Queensland gas work licence or gas work authorisation can legally carry out gas fitting work and issue a gas compliance certificate. Business Queensland's own advice is to check the licence register before work starts, confirming the licence is current and covers the specific work being performed.

Why licensing is the whole point of the certificate system

A gas compliance certificate is only meaningful if the person who signed it was legally entitled to. Queensland restricts gas fitting work to holders of a current gas work licence or gas work authorisation, issued and tracked by Resources Safety and Health Queensland. Someone without a current licence cannot lawfully perform the work or issue a valid compliance certificate, no matter how experienced they say they are.

This is also the regulator's own stated concern: the Queensland Gas Association's safety guidance notes the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate has seen an increase in gas installations without compliance certificates or plates, which is exactly the outcome unlicensed or corner-cutting work produces.

What to check before you hire

Ask for the fitter's licence or authorisation number up front. Business Queensland's consumer guidance is specific: check the register to make sure the licence or authorisation is current and covers the work to be performed, since a licence can be restricted to particular types of gas work rather than covering everything.

It's also reasonable to ask how they'll issue the compliance certificate, since it should be lodged through the RSHQ Portal with an original copy provided to you as the owner. A fitter who can't explain this, or who suggests skipping the certificate to save money, is not someone whose work you can rely on later, whether that's at resale or if something goes wrong.

What a valid job looks like at the end

At the end of legitimate gas work in Queensland you should have: the fitter's licence number, a gas system compliance certificate covering exactly the work performed, and (for the specific device types the regulation still requires it for) a compliance plate. If any of these are missing, ask why before you consider the job complete.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if unlicensed work is done on my gas system in QLD?

It is not legally valid gas fitting work and cannot be certified as compliant. It also creates a real safety risk, since the system hasn't been checked against the required standard by someone qualified to do so.

Can a licence cover some gas work but not other types?

Yes. Licences and authorisations can be scoped to particular kinds of gas work, which is why Business Queensland recommends checking the register confirms the licence covers your specific job.
