Queensland (QLD)

How Long Does a Gas Compliance Certificate Last in QLD?

Short answer: A Queensland gas compliance certificate has no set expiry date for residential systems. It stays valid for as long as the gas installation it describes remains unchanged. The moment you alter the system, whether that's a new appliance, a moved gas line, or an LPG cylinder swap to a different setup, that work needs its own new certificate.

Why there's no renewal date

Queensland's gas compliance system is built around the work, not the calendar. A licensed gas fitter certifies that the installation was safe at the moment it was completed. Because gas fittings don't generally degrade on a fixed timetable the way, say, a smoke alarm battery does, the law doesn't impose a routine renewal requirement on residential gas compliance certificates the way Victoria's rental system does with its two-yearly gas safety check.

That said, "no fixed expiry" is not the same as "never worth checking." Gas fittings, flues and connections can develop faults over years of use even without any new work being done, which is why a periodic voluntary inspection by a licensed gas fitter is still a sensible safety step, particularly for an older property or one you've just bought without a clear service history.

What actually resets the clock

Any new gas work resets the certificate for the part of the system that was touched. That includes installing a new appliance, replacing an existing one, extending or altering gas pipework, and reconnecting a system that was previously disconnected. Servicing an appliance without altering the gas fitting, such as a routine clean of a gas heater, is generally treated differently and doesn't automatically trigger a brand new compliance certificate, though the servicing fitter should still tell you if they find something that does need certified work.

If you're not sure your certificate still reflects the system

If you've had renovations, added appliances, or simply don't know when the last gas work was done, the practical answer is to book a licensed gas fitter for a current inspection rather than guess. This is especially worth doing before selling a property; see our guide on gas compliance certificates when selling a house in QLD.

Frequently asked questions

Does a QLD gas compliance certificate expire after a set number of years?

No. There is no fixed expiry for a residential gas compliance certificate in Queensland. It stays current until the gas system it covers is altered.

Does routine gas heater servicing require a new compliance certificate?

Not automatically, if no gas fitting work is altered during the service. If the fitter needs to alter the fitting to fix a fault, that work does need its own certificate.
